Garage Sale Checklist: The Ultimate Guide to a Hassle-Free, Money-Making Sale

Use this updated garage sale checklist to plan every detail from start to finish. Whether it’s your first sale or you’re a seasoned weekend seller, this guide will help you keep things organized, stress-free, and profitable.

2–3 Weeks Before the Sale: Prep Like a Pro

sell, donate, keep boxes to organize garage sale

Start the Great Declutter
Go through every room and pull out items you no longer use. Remember: if it’s priced right, it can sell. Think books, kitchenware, old electronics, clothes, toys, furniture, tools—almost anything! In each room, sort your clutter into separate piles of “sell, donate, and keep.”

Price Smart

Aim to price most items at 25–35% of retail.

For clothing, stick to 5–15% of the original price.

Use easy-to-read price stickers or tags. Group smaller items in “2 for $1” or “Fill a bag for $5” deals

Pick the Perfect Date & Time

  • Choose a Saturday or Sunday, early morning (8 AM–12 PM is prime time)
  • Avoid holidays, big events, or bad weather forecasts

Get the Word Out:

Write a clear, upbeat ad with specific items that will attract buyers (e.g., “baby gear,” “vintage tools,” “designer clothes”). If you are comfortable with AI, ask for help writing the ad and be specific with details about the important items that you have for sale.

Advertise on:

clothes for sale1 Week Before the Sale: Clean, Repair & Promote

  • Local Facebook groups or newspapers
  • Craigslist or Nextdoor
  • Community bulletin boards
  • Word of mouth – ask neighbors to join in!

Clean = Cash

  • Cleaned, working items fetch more and sell faster!
  • Wipe down dusty items, polish furniture, and launder clothes
  • Make any minor repairs

Plan Your Sign Strategy

  • Map out where signs will go (busy intersections, nearby stop signs, etc.)
  • Make bold, colorful signs with arrows, dates, times, address, and large print
  • Add balloons or streamers to your sign for visibility
  • Attach signs to sturdy stakes or cardboard so they don’t flop in the wind!

1–2 Days Before: Get Set for Success

Set Up the Sale Area

  • Use tables, book shelves, or crates to create a shop-like experience
  • Hang clothes neatly (a broomstick between two ladders works in a pinch)
  • Group similar items together: books, electronics, toys, etc.

Prep the Checkout Area

  • Stock up on small bills and coins
  • Have a cash box or apron pouch
  • Gather: newspaper for wrapping breakables; spare bags, calculator, pen and paper for notes or price changes

Night Before: Final Touches

Post Your Signs

  • Get them up in the early evening to catch morning commuters
  • Double check each is clearly visible from the road

Set Up Some Vibes

  • Chill playlist? Check.
  • Water or lemonade stand? Bonus points!
  • Shade, chairs, and snacks? You’ll thank yourself.

Morning of Sale: Showtime!

Secure Your Home

  • Keep your front door locked
  • 30 minutes before opening time, open the gates/door to your sale to accomodate early birds (and, hopefully, get your first sales
  • Block off private areas with signs or barriers

Be Friendly, But Savvy

  • Greet everyone with a smile
  • Expect haggling—set prices with room to negotiate
  • Bundle deals encourage more sales (e.g., “Buy 3, get 1 free!”)

Right after sale

* Take signs down – not only is this courteous to the environment, but you might incur a fine or penalty if you don’t Count your money and rejoice!

After the Sale: Wrap It Up Right

Take Down Signs
Leaving signs up after your sale? It’s a neighborhood no-no—and in some places, you could be fined.

Count Your Profits & Celebrate
Tally up your earnings and feel good about decluttering and making some extra cash!

What’s Left?

Consider donating the remainders to a local charity but keep valuable unsold items for online sale (Facebook Marketplace, eBay, etc.)
